Water shortage hits our paddling pools!!

Rocketing temperatures are not catered for in Elmbridge during hot weather!!

The letter below has been sent to our local press on behalf of the children of Elmbridge to request the “right sort of hot weather”  that will enable the council to spare some water!!

25th June 2011

Dear Sir,

Two weeks ago you reported that a mother from Weybridge was critical of Elmbridge Council’s decision to close its 3 paddling pools apart from the 6 week school holiday period between July 23 and September 4th. Previously the pools were open for 19 weeks over the summer. This matter was debated during the Council’s discussions on its 2011 / 2012 Budget on December 8th last year. The paddling pool closure proposal was opposed by Residents Association and Liberal Democrat Councillors – the minutes show an amendment tabled by Cllr Miles Macleod and myself. Unfortunately the Conservative Group used their majority on the Council to push this matter through without the full discussion we had asked for. All that we achieved was an assurance from the Portfolio Holder Cllr Mrs Fuller, that the Council had “a contingency fund to enable the pools to be opened over very hot spells of weather.”

This Sunday, we enjoyed a rare such spell of hot and sunny weather over the weekend, exactly the sort of day for taking young children down to the paddling pools. I visited each of the paddling pools to see if our Adminstration had delivered on its promise to open  the pools if it were hot. But there was not a drop of water in any of them. Perhaps we had the wrong sort of hot weather?

 Yours sincerely,

 Chris Sadler

Councillor – Walton Central Ward,

Elmbridge Borough Council
