Walton………town of choice for traffic diversions?

Road works and the resultant traffic diversions are certainly more prevelant this year partly because of the need to have better quality road surfaces for cyclists on the Olympic Cycle Test Event. However, when traffic diversions are directed through Walton for activities not directly associated with Walton, residents get frustrated and upset as long traffic queues build up in the town and central main roads.

We have just seen the annual Hampton Court Flower Show with traffic directed from many major roads in the borough through Walton to parking facilities on Hurst Road.

Next we have the cycle event which we are told will be closing roads en route for some hours on the 14th August.

What next you may ask?  Well as from 15th August Veolia will be closing much of Queens Road in Weybridge to lay a new water main. So what, its not in Walton….but, the effects will be felt thoughout Walton, why?

Traffic leaving Weybridge towards Hersham will be diverted along Oatlands Drive into New Zealand Avenue then into Hersham Road up to the Halfway and then to Hersham via the roundabout at Queensway North and then back to Queens Road. The reverse of this route will be for traffic going from Hersham to Weybridge.

The real fright for Walton is that it is anticipated that this upheaval will be for 9 weeks!
