Walton as it was in 1890……how do you remember Walton?

The images below offer the reader a little bit of the personal history of Joseph Thomas Weedon who was born in Walton on 20th January 1878.

When Joseph was a boy he, like many others growing up in Walton around this time, had to start work very early in life and he had three post rounds which covered Bridge Street, Church Street and the High Street.

In later life Joseph wrote down what he remembered about these streets, which as a 12yr old in 1890, he had walked delivering post. In the scanned images of his documents (papers) below you will see, in Joseph’s own handwriting, details about the houses, businesses and people that occupied the buildings.

These three papers were passed on to The Walton Society by Mr Purdue, whose family were occupiers of houses and businesses in Walton. Mr Purdue has agreed for us to upload these papers from a local interest point of view. At a later date we may be able to bring some personal memories of Walton as it was between the World Wars, from Mr Purdue.

A very topical name at this moment is mentioned in these papers, Mr Drewitt who occupied a house in Bridge Street.

Again, if you look carefully you will see reference to the last Czar of Russia leaving the Mountbatten family home of the Elm Grove Estate.
