Soul of the Street – Departing?

Junction of Church Street and High Street

Hepworth Way outside Walton Library
In the last few weeks the people of Walton have begun to benefit from the excellent re-development of our High Street and now that the sun is shining will enjoy it even more when they are able to take a rest from shopping on the new seats which have been installed outside The Heart shopping centre. But now, just having got all of the work finished along comes one of the utility companies and not only do they dig up the new paving but having completed their work they don’t re-lay the slabs removed, they ‘bless’ Walton with a ‘quick fix’ and fill the hole with tarmac so not only does it look unsightly but it will melt when summer arrives and become more unsightly. There are already two offending patches in the footpaths, one outside the Public Library in Hepworth Way, this was a result of BT providing a new broadband distribution point and the other at the junction of Church Street and High Street., unfortunately the utility company on this occasion is not known. (please see photos)Questions that need an answer:

  1. Why doesn’t SCC ensure that these utility companies complete the work to the original specification?
  2. What has happened to the paving slabs and blocks removed?
  3. Why do we have to put up with this treatment by the utility companies when we have by one means or another had to pay for our new town footpaths?

  • This is very interesting because I have always wondered who is responsible for making good. Lets hope you can influence SCC/EBC to do something and get the footpaths repaired properly and not be a problem to older pedestrians.

  • I am an older pedestrian and e mailed EBC on the April 4th about this problem. The Utilities are a complete law unto themselves it would appear. SCC have not taken responsibility and its impossible to find out who the person accountable is. SCCor EBC have an auto response but nothing has been done to date. Lets hope it made good before 2012.
