High Street to Church Street….a dangerous corner!!

As part of the renewal of paving in the High Street the safety railings were removed. The renewed pavement extends from the High Street and into Church Street by a few feet. After the paving was renewed the railings were not replaced, these railing were immediately missed as they were a very effective safety barrier particularly for older folk and youngsters in or out of pushchairs.

After many requests the railings were replaced, but in exactly the same position as those which were removed. The new railings now leave the apex of the corner totally exposed and therefore liable to drivers ‘cutting’ the corner be it in passenger vehicles or articulated lorries.

Some of our local residents have raised this with us as a safety issue which needs looking into and we have now observed over a ‘hour’ on a busy afternoon the number of times vehicles which have ‘cut’ this corner. It was estimated that more than fifteen vehicles could be deemed to be too close to cutting the corner and in one instance a people carrier was witnessed driving through the two dropped curbs and narrowly missing a woman waiting to cross Church Street and a man waiting to cross the High Street.

Clearly this is something that must be addressed either by Surrey County Council Highways or Elmbridge Borough Council, before serious injury takes place.
