Clean-up on a bright new day…….

Community Clean-Up – Cowey Sale and Thames Tow Path

This morning was warm and sunny with no wind – perfect conditions for being out in the fresh air down by the river.

Between 10am and 11am, 35 volunteers collected 39 sacks of rubbish, including a car exhaust silencer, a bed pan, traffic cone and a folding push chair from the undergrowth at Cowey Sale and along the tow path between the marina and first Desborough Island bridge.  The area appeared to have recently been cleared by the Council after the poor state the area has been in, so we were all surprised at just how much litter we were still able to find.

Volunteers took particular delight when people passing by asked what they were doing, with many commending them for the work they were doing.

Walton on Thames Trading Alliance, organised the event with support from the Walton Society, McDonalds, Sainsbury’s, and The Heart.  Elmbridge Borough Council provided the litter pickers and arranged for disposal of the rubbish that we collected.  Danny at MacDonald’s kindly sponsored the event providing volunteers with complimentary refreshment vouchers for helpers to redeem in his restaurant afterwards.

Walton Society Councillors took leading roles and once again it was great to have a strong contingent of Walton Society members and supporters being involved. Thank you to everyone who took part.

Community Clean-Ups are now a regular event and are growing.  The next is scheduled for Sunday the 17th July from 9.45am for the safety briefing finishing at 11am prompt with refreshments afterwards at MacDonald’s Restaurant.  If you have an area in mind that you feel deserves the litter picking blitz treatment please drop an email to me at alan.wotta@gmail.com.  Details of the next location will be provided in an email ‘blog’ and will be available soon on this website.

Why not join us at one of these very friendly (and actually quite fun) events?  Well behaved kids, partners and dogs are welcome – come along as a family and show you care for your community!
